A Toronto family foundation

Planting today what others will grow into tomorrow.

The F.W. Thompson Family Foundation supports health research, education, and community wellbeing — investing patiently in people and ideas that strengthen lives across Canada.

About the Foundation

Rooted in Toronto. Committed to Canada.

The F.W. Thompson Family Foundation is a private family foundation based in Toronto's Lawrence Park neighbourhood. We were established to honour a family legacy of generosity and to put it to work where it can do the most good.

Our grant-making focuses on three connected areas — advancing health research, widening access to education, and strengthening the communities we call home. We partner with researchers, institutions, and registered charities who share our belief that thoughtful, sustained support can change outcomes for generations.

  • Patient capital

We commit for the long term, giving partners the stability to pursue meaningful, lasting change.

  • Rigour and humility

We follow the evidence, listen closely to the people closest to the work, and keep learning.

  • Family stewardship

Each generation of the Thompson family carries forward a shared commitment to giving back.

Our Work

Where we focus our giving

Three priorities guide every grant we make, each chosen for its capacity to create lasting change.

Health Research

We fund promising medical research and the clinicians and scientists behind it — with a particular interest in early-stage work that may struggle to find support elsewhere.

  • Research grants and fellowships
  • Patient-centred care initiatives
  • Hospital and institute partnerships

Education

We believe opportunity should not depend on circumstance. Our education grants help students access and complete post-secondary studies and reach their potential.

  • Scholarships and bursaries
  • Mentorship programs
  • Learning access for underserved youth

Community

Strong neighbourhoods are built by people who show up for one another. We support local organizations that nurture belonging, wellbeing, and green spaces.

  • Local charities and social services
  • Arts, culture, and heritage
  • Parks and environmental stewardship

How to apply for support
